Overview

Who is whitening for?

Coffee, tea, red wine, smoking and aging dim your teeth's natural brightness over years. Whitening removes these stains without thinning enamel; it restores your own colour.

Anyone with healthy teeth is a candidate. Cavities, gum inflammation, or existing crowns/veneers change the plan. During the exam we simulate how much lift is realistic for you.

Causes

What causes discolouration?

Knowing the cause picks the right treatment. There are two types of staining.

Extrinsic (on the surface)

Stains on the enamel surface — they respond best to whitening.
  • Coffee, tea and cocoa
  • Red wine and concentrated fruit juices
  • Tobacco and cigarettes
  • Dark sauces (soy, balsamic)
  • Poor brushing / plaque build-up
  • Some mouth rinses (long-term use)

Intrinsic (inside the tooth)

Discolouration within the tooth structure — a longer process; sometimes a different method.
  • Tetracycline antibiotics in childhood (grey-blue shade)
  • Excess fluoride (fluorosis)
  • Aging (thinning enamel reveals yellow dentin)
  • Trauma (tooth losing vitality)
  • Root-canal-treated dead tooth
  • Genetic factors
Methods

Four whitening methods

We pick the right method during the exam. The best result in most cases comes from a combined approach.

At home

Take-home tray

We take impressions and fabricate a custom transparent tray. You apply a gentler gel at home for 1-2 weeks.

1-2 weeks 4-8 h/day Controlled lift
Combined

Combined protocol

Rapid start in the clinic, maintenance at home. The longest-lasting, whitest result comes from this combination.

2-3 weeks Longest-lasting 6-month refresh
Special

Internal bleaching

For a single root-canal-treated, darkened tooth. Whitening agent is placed inside the tooth; 2-3 sessions bring a striking match.

Single tooth 2-3 sessions Dead teeth
Shade scale

Shade scale — before / after

On the Vita shade guide, a typical patient lifts about 8 shades. Clinical example range.

← Before A3-A4 Yellowish, darker tone
After → B1-A1 Bright and natural white
Appointment day

Appointment day — 5 steps

What to expect during a single session, minute by minute.

01

Exam & shade record

Your starting shade is noted on the Vita scale. Cavities and sensitivity are checked.

02

Professional cleaning

Tartar and surface stains are removed. This step alone can lift 1-2 shades.

03

Gum isolation

A resin barrier protects your gums. Sensitivity minimised.

04

Gel + light activation

35-40% hydrogen peroxide gel is applied and activated with LED/laser. 3 × 15 minutes.

05

Result & fluoride

New shade is recorded. A fluoride gel prevents sensitivity. The first look in the mirror.

Suitability

Who's a good candidate, who needs caution?

Great candidates

  • Adults with healthy teeth and gums
  • Yellow or light-brown extrinsic staining
  • Previously whitened, wanting a refresh
  • Before a big event — wedding, graduation, photos

Needs assessment

  • Under 16 (enamel not fully matured)
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Untreated cavities or gum inflammation
  • Crowns, veneers, composite fillings in the smile zone (they don't whiten)
  • Highly sensitive teeth
  • Tetracycline-induced dark staining (extra sessions needed)
Afterwards

The 48-hour white diet

Enamel tubules stay open for 48 hours after whitening — anything coloured can penetrate. The first two days are critical.

Eat freely

  • Milk, white yoghurt, cheese
  • Chicken, turkey, white fish
  • White rice, potatoes, pasta
  • Banana, pear, peeled apple
  • Water, soda water, whey
  • Cauliflower, asparagus, spinach (mild)

Avoid

  • Coffee, tea, cocoa
  • Red wine, coloured juices
  • Tobacco & cigarettes (strict!)
  • Red sauces, soy, balsamic
  • Blackberries, strawberries, blueberries
  • Coloured mouthwashes
Longevity

How long does it last?

Your habits decide. With easy maintenance, it stretches for years.

Average duration

Typically 1-2 years. Longer for non-smokers and those who limit staining foods.

6-month refresh

One week of overnight tray wear at home stretches results for years. A 30-minute in-office refresh is another option.

Daily care

Soft brush + whitening paste 2-3 times a week. Hard brushing and abrasive pastes do the opposite.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What patients ask before whitening.

Completely safe when done under a dentist. Gel concentrations and timing are clinically validated. Gum contact is blocked, and a fluoride finish prevents sensitivity. Over-the-counter strips and kits — unsupervised — are risky.

Usually 4-8 shades. Coffee/smoking stains respond best. Tetracycline-related dark grey/blue shades may need several sessions. We set a realistic target during the exam.

Mild cold sensitivity in the first 24-48 hours is possible but temporary. Starting a sensitivity-reducing toothpaste a week ahead virtually eliminates it. The fluoride gel at the end also protects.

No. Porcelain, zirconia and composite don't respond to chemical bleaching. If you have restorations in your smile zone, we first whiten the natural teeth, then match the new shade when replacing the restoration.

Not recommended. Oral exposure to the gel is a theoretical risk. Postponed until after. In the meantime, a professional cleaning can remove surface stains.

On average 1-2 years, depending on smoking, coffee and red-wine habits. A combined (office + home) protocol plus a 6-month refresh extends it to 3-5 years. Some natural yellowing always continues — but teeth never return to the original shade.

A resin barrier protects them fully before treatment. Incorrect application can cause short-term blanching — temporary, no permanent mark. In the clinic this risk is negligible.

Yes. If the tooth is root-canal-treated, we do "internal bleaching" — the agent is placed inside the tooth for 2-3 sessions until it matches surrounding teeth.

They can have a minor effect on surface stains but are nowhere near clinical results. More importantly, on sensitive teeth, cavities or inflamed gums they can cause lasting damage. Never use without a dental exam.
